Danilo Rea dopo essersi diplomato al Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia di Roma inizia a suonare in jam session casalinghe insieme a Roberto Gatto, Enzo Pietropaoli, Marcello Piras e Carlo Tamponi. Nel 1975 forma insieme agli amici Pietropaoli e Gatto il “Trio di Roma”. Il gruppo diventa in poco tempo protagonista della nuova scena jazzistica romana che si sta affacciando alla ribalda alla fine degli anni Settanta con concerti nei principali jazz club della città e l’incisione di un disco col trombonista statunitense Curtis Fuller. Nei primi anni Ottanta entra a far parte del quartetto di Maurizio Giammarco, con cui incide nel 1983 l’album “Accuracy of the Night“, e collabora col quintetto del contrabbassista Giovanni Tommaso in lavori discografici come “Via G. T” del 1986.

Un anno dopo il pianista prende parte al quintetto dei “Lingomania” con il quale il leader, Maurizio Giammarco, si avvicina alle sonorità fusion. Nelle varie line up della formazione militano Enzo Pietropaoli, Furio Di Castri, Flavio Boltro, Stefano Sabbatini, Umberto Fiorentino, Roberto Gatto e Alberto D’Anna. I Lingomania incidono diversi dischi e tengono numerosi concerti in Italia e all’estero. Nel 1984, 1985 e 1987 il quintetto viene nominato come “migliore gruppo” nel referendum “Top Jazz” indetto dalla rivista Musica Jazz. Dopo lo scioglimento nel 1989 della formazione di Maurizio Giammarco, Danilo Rea prosegue la sua carriera collaborando con Pietro Tonolo, Lee Konitz, Art Farmer, Chet Baker, Gato Barbieri, Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Tony Oxley, John Scofield e altri.

Nella seconda metà degli anni Novanta, Danilo Rea forma insieme a Enzo Pietropaoli e il batterista Fabrizio Sferra il trio “Doctor3”. Il gruppo si mette in evidenza per la forte interattività melodico-ritmico fra i tre componenti basata sulla ricerca trasversale e senza preconcetti di materiale compositivo estrapolato dalle più disparate scene musicali: jazz, musica leggera italiana, rock, pop e soul. Nel 1997 i Doctor3 registrano il primo album “The Tales Of Doctor3“, ricevendo subito consensi positivi da parte di pubblico e critica. Il disco, infatti, viene premiato come “migliore disco” dell’anno nel referendum Top Jazz indetto dalla rivista Musica Jazz. A questo lavoro discografico segue nel 1999 l’album “The Songs Remains the Same”, che ancora una volta raccoglie riconoscimenti da parte della critica specializzata.

Nel 2000 Danilo Rea incide il suo primo album solista dal titolo “Lost in Europe”, contenente gli episodi migliori dei concerti tenuti in quel periodo dal pianista in Europa, a cui segue, nel 2003, un lavoro discografico dedicato alle arie più importanti del repertorio lirico italiano dal titolo “Lirico”.

Dotato di una spiccata propensione verso l’urgenza melodica associata ad una grande capacità di improvvisazione mutuata dalla scuola classica, ma soprattutto di una duttilità espressiva e dinamica che gli consente di approcciarsi a diversi stili e linguaggi musicali, Danilo Rea ha al suo attivo lunghe collaborazioni anche con prestigiosi esponenti della canzone italiana: Mina, Gino Paoli, Claudio Baglioni e Pino Daniele.
