A Beautiful Grit - Piero Umiliani

Italian cinema and 1960s jazz

Soundtrack of the film “Una Bella Grinta”, directed by director Giuliano Montaldo. The music for the Italian film, composed and directed by Piero Umiliani, was recorded in 1965 for the label CAM.

The music for the film is performed by the quintet made up of: Gato Barbieri (soprano saxophone and leader), Franco D'Andrea (piano), Enrico Rava (trumpet), Gegè Munari (drums), Gianni Foccià (double bass). The training in the period between 1964 and 1965 was enrolled in "Purgatory" (jazz club located in an underground room of the "Meo Patacca" restaurant near the Trastevere district of Rome), working at the same time on the creation of soundtracks for the Italian cinema. In addition to the film "Una Bella Grinta", the quintet participated in the recording of the soundtrack of "Prima della Revolution" by director Bernardo Bertolucci in 1964, later discarded in favor of the one composed by Ennio Morricone and Gino Paoli.
