The left hand of the pianist

Inside Improvvisation
Second video appointment with the mini series dedicated to the piano together with the teacher Andrea Saffirio.

The pianist's left hand, as we saw in the previous video, it is possible to express a melody effectively with just a few notes even in piano solo. But what happens if we decide to improvise on piano solo?

The technique seen for the harmonization of the melody is always valid, but we may not have the promptness of reflexes to harmonize on the fly a melody that we are improvising on the spot.
For this reason, if we want to be freer in the construction of our improvisation, we can take advantage of another very important technique: the three note voicings.

Possible permutations for side-part voicings:

  • 1 – 7 – 10
  • 10 – 7 – 1
  • 1 – 7 – 10 | 10 – 7 – 1
  • 1 – 7+10
  • 7+10 – 1
  • 1 – 7+10 | 7+10 – 1
  • 7 – 10 – 1
  • 7 – 1 – 10

Usually this term refers to chords divided between the two hands, but it is possible to readapt it for the left hand only, in order to leave the right hand completely free to improvise without constraints.
The left hand of the pianist, this technique is particularly useful to give support and movement to our solo piano improvisation, but at the same time we do not want to resort to static voicings or the classical walkin’ bass with the left hand.
