Introduction to Reaper

Reaper is a complete digital audio production application, offering a complete set of tools for multitrack and MIDI audio recording, editing, processing, mixing and mastering. REAPER supports a wide range of hardware, digital formats and plugins. This first lesson is dedicated to explaining the main screen.

Reaper is a complete digital audio production application, offering a complete set of tools for multitrack and MIDI audio recording, editing, processing, mixing and mastering. REAPER supports a wide range of hardware, digital formats and plugins. This first lesson is dedicated to explaining the main screen. in this section you will find all the basic settings and the main Reaper commands such as creating a new project, saving or imparting a project, the window for the main settings of the project (bit rate, sampling frequency, etc.) undo, rendo, activation of the automatic crossfade, grid setting, snap, activation of groups and automations etc.
Timeline: the Timeline measures the length of your project and helps you identify the position of the various elements of the project by dividing the Arrange area into measures / beats or minutes / seconds
Track Controll Panel: this area controls your audio and Midi tracks, thus enabling recording, I / O channels, FX etc.
Arrange Area: this section is where all our Audio and Midi clips are located
Transport Bar: this section is used to control playback and start and stop of recording
Mixer Control Panel: in this section we have the project mixer and the Master output control

Main Toolbar


The interface toolbar is located at the top left of the screen. To enter the menu of each tool, just left click on the corresponding icon or use the shortcuts listed below. Some tools are very simple while others have a very particular functioning and will be explored in the next lessons.

New Project: Cmd + N
Open Project: Cmd + O
Save Project: Cmd + S
Project settings }: Opt + Enter
Undo: Cmd + Z
AutoCrossfade: Opt + X
Edit Grouping: Opt + Shift + G
Ripple Editing: Opt + P
Grid: Opt + G
Snap: Opt + S

Transport Bar

The transport bar is used to control the playback of the project. In order we have the keys for fast forward or backward scrolling between the markers, the start and stop key for recording, play, loop activation, the stop and pause key. Then we find the position (in beats and seconds) of the cursor and of the selection. We can also control Bpm, tempo, global automation settings and project playback speed. Be careful to change the playback speed because the pitch of the audio clips is also changed.

Timeline

In the Timeline we see the passage of time in relation to the positions of our clips. Interface to change the type of time display we can left click on the time line, in the menu we can find all the possible views:

Zoom
Another useful shortcut is that of the zoom of the Arrangement area:

Horizontal: up / down arrow
Vertical: fn + up / down arrow
