John Wooton

He is the director of the Percussion Department at the University of Southern Mississippi. Born in Lafayette, Los Angeles, he plays vibraphone in the Southern Miss Jazz Quintet and leads the professional band “Kaiso!” playing the steel pan.

As a teacher and musician he has been awarded 5 times by the PASIC Marching Percussion Forum. For 10 years he collaborated with the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps of Rockford, as a performer, instructor and arranger. Over the last 20 years he has collaborated with various drum corps as a consultant.

Within the Southern Mississippi faculty, Wooton created a strong percussion department, established and instructed the Southern Miss Steel Pan Orchestra, the Pop Percussion Ensemble, the Samba Band, and the Salsa Band. He is past president of the Percussion Arts Society and was a member of the Percussive Arts Society Marching Committee from 1990 to 2012.

Endorser of the Pearl Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks, Remo Drum Heads, and Row Loff Publications. He is a member of the Vic Firth Education Team and is present on the Vic Firth website as a demonstrator of the 40 rudiments (www.vicfirth.com).

He has recently performed concerts and master classes in England, China, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Alberta, Canada and at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. In the United States his recitals, workshops and concerts have been hosted everywhere except in two states.

  • He is the author of two methods and numerous rudimentary drum solos and pieces for percussion marching band ensembles.
  • His recent book “Dr. Throwdown's Rudimental Remedies "includes a 2-hour DVD, 951 play-along songs and 25 lessons.
  • "The Drummer's Rudimental Reference Book" is a basic method used in many American and foreign universities.
