BARBARA WIERNIK
Jazz Singer – Song Writer – Composer – Teacher
Barbara Wiernik is a singer and not only. The lyrics and melodies she creates flow between different styles with incredible versatility. Vocalist for about twenty years, she is constantly looking for new sounds, which give her jazz vocal a very modern note.
She uses her voice as an instrument, making melodies that are part of her language and universe. Numerous trips, especially to India, have enriched her music with various traditions with which she loves to juggle. This gave her unique style a deep, subtle and powerful touch.
Her vocal musical path was characterized by the teaching of, among others, Norma Winstone and David Linx in jazz and R.A. Also M° Ramamani, in Indian singing. She also attended the lessons of Diederik Wissels, Kenny Wheeler and Kris Defoort, with whom she studied at the Antwerpen Jazz Studio and the Koninklijk van Brussel Conservatory, where she graduated. Her experiences also includes various training sessions throughout Europe, and in India for longer periods.
Barbara released her first CD, "Eclipse" (Mogno Music), in 2000, with pianist Jozef Dumoulin, and participated in the albums of Alexandre Furnelle (Mogno Music), Manu Hermia (Igloo Mondo), Giacomo Lariccia (Travers), Marie-Sophie Talbot (Skat), PiWiZ – Zurstrassen, Pirotton, Wiernik (Home Records). She invited reknown musicians from the Belgian jazz scene for her album "Soul of Butterflies" (AZ Productions).
With bass player Jean-Louis Rassinfosse and guitarist Alain Pierre, she founded a trio called «WRAP!», She later released their first album, «Endless» (Igloo Records). The project "Les 100 ciels de Barbara Wiernik" brought together 13 musicians with jazz or classical backgrounds. Another project in which she is deeply involved is her duet with guitarist Alain Pierre, called "Different Lines".
Her latest project is called COMPLICITY, with the Italian pianist Nicola Andrioli. In October 2016, they released, for Spinach Pie Records, their first album, in which fantastic musicians (Manu Hermia, Marco Bardoscia and Antoine Pierre) participated, and with whom they toured Europe and Asia.
Another aspect of Barbara's talent is her teaching activity, for jazz singing, improvisation, vocal techniques and polyphony. She is currently mainly a teacher of jazz vocals at the Royal Conservatoire in Antwerpen, the International Summer Academy in Libramont and the jazz camp in Jodoigne. She has also taught at the Conservatory of Leuven, the Academy of Saint-Gilles and various educational campuses around the world.
